In 2009, the Ride to Conquer Cancer was born. The in-augural event was a 260km bicycle ride from Vancouver to Seattle raising money for the BC Cancer Foundation. The BC Cancer Foundation is an independent charitable organization that raises funds to support breakthrough research and care at the BC Cancer Agency. The BC Cancer Agency is responsible for cancer care and control for everyone in British Columbia. In the Ride to Conquer Cancer's first year, over 6 million dollars was raised and it was sure to become the start of something truly amazing.
Last year, individuals from around Nanaimo and surrounding area came together to attend an orientation for the Ride to Conquer Cancer. As conversations developed it was decided that creating a team was the best way to move forward. Each rider had to raise a minimum of $2500.00 in order to participate in the event. Luc Begin and Ian Drown became the Captains and the Nanaimo Rides team was born. Within only a few months we all had surpassed our individual fund raising requirement goals and by the start of the ride we had raised over $47,000 dollars. At the end of the first day of the ride our entire team went straight over to the sign up booth for the 2011 Ride to Conquer Cancer. It was an amazing event and the people we met along the way were truly inspiring. 9.1 million was raised. For the 2011 Ride to Conquer Cancer we changed our name to "NANAIMO RIDES AGAIN" and through our efforts we were able to raise over $34,000 for a two year total of over $80,000! It was an amazing accomplishment. One of the most amazing things to develop that year was joining forces with Therese Swettenham and Roger Ball who both co-chair the BC Cancer Foundation. Through their work it was arranged so that all the money we raise through the Ride to Conquer Cancer stay's on the island! So we adopted a new slogan "From the Island, For the Island" In total 11.1 million dollars was raised for the 2011 Ride to Conquer Cancer. So for the 2012 Ride to Conquer Cancer your NANAIMO RIDES AGAIN TEAM is riding for the island! Whether you are in Campbell River, Port Alberni, Duncan, Victoria, and yes, even Nanaimo, all of our fundraising efforts go directly to supporting the BC Cancer Foundation in Victoria, BC. Our team has almost doubled in size, we've started our fundraising earlier, and we are just as committed as ever to ridding this world of Cancer! I want to thank each and everyone of you who have already donated to a team member or are thinking about donating. The fight to rid this world of cancer must continue. All of my team mates and I'm sure all of you, have been affected by Cancer in some way. It affects those that have it and those around it. We cannot give up the fight to remove it from all our lives forever. WILL YOU HELP US REACH OUR GOAL??
